“Hello Juan! How are you, Maria? How’s it going, Carlos?” When I arrive at the harbour, you’ll first hear me before you see me. I really like to say hello to everyone, talk to them, and chat, which makes my introverted husband Tomek laugh and say:
“I’ve been here for years and I still don’t know everyone. How is it that you know the names of nearly everyone here?”
“No idea, I guess it’s just that I’m interested in other people.” Tomek, on the other hand, is a classic task-accomplishing individual: he is devoted to his work, and if he tackles a task, he gives it his 100%. He takes longer than I do to open up, but his relationships with customers are really solid and long-lasting. The fact that he solely receives bookings from word of mouth is the best evidence for that. He’s also patient. He started from scratch in this harbour, washing yachts, learning how to fix things, and gaining experience step by step. Today he is a licenced yacht master and he knows his job better than anyone else. Yacht owners know that if Tomek takes care of their vessels, everything will go smoothly. We’re like fire and water. While I am full of boundless energy, his laborious dripping wears away the stone. The reason I am currently in Spain is because I trust my own instincts and often follow my heart. Tomek and I met in Poland. A little over a year later, he left to work abroad and unexpectedly landed in the southern region of Spain, close to Marbella, which has since become our home. I decided to put everything on the line. A month later, just after I turned 18, I joined Tomek even though I didn’t know any other languages. I was both excited and terrified. The boy I followed to Spain 17 years ago is now my husband. Together we raise our daughter Maya while working hard on our Mayachts business. The intangible capital of our company is our determination, long-term experience, and ability to listen to the needs of others. For years, I worked in a restaurant, then in real estate. I was also a stewardess on a cruise liner. While I had positive relationships with both my customers and co-workers, I felt that something was missing from my life. The dress code made me uncomfortable, I was sick of not being able to be who I truly am, and most importantly, I had no say over the quality of what I offered. Maya turned my world upside down. I suddenly lost control over when I ate, when I took a bath, and how long I could sleep. In my head I kept saying over and over again: “It’s only a phase… it’ll be over soon.” Yet I needed this break to reflect on my priorities. Today, I get to live out my dream of running my own business, giving you the chance to have experiences and memories that you will never forget.
